Leith Athletic  set up a quarter-final clash with Craigroyston FC in the League Cup, after a comprehensive 3-1 victory over Edinburgh University at Peffermill Playing Fields.

The game started with both teams pushing for an early opener and the best chance of the opening exchanges fell to Jack Combe after just seven minutes.  A cross from the right by Jason Stevens was played deep into the six yard box, but Combe’s header was well saved from Mark Tait.

The first goal of the game came in the 11th minute when a corner on the right from Kenny Hall was met by the head of Neil Lowson and his header powered beyond Tait.

The University almost struck back immediately when a ball down the left by Calum Frain was collected by Jack Beacher.  His shot from 20-yards was well saved by Iain Gordon.

Edinburgh University made things tougher on themselves in the 24th minute when a through ball from Combe was collected by Stevens.  He forced himself into the box, before being pulled back by Joe Price-Wright.  Match referee John Weir pointed to the spot and sent Price-Wright for an early shower.  Combe stepped up to take the spot kick, but this was well saved by Tait to keep the score at 1-0.

The home side started the second half the better team, despite being at a numerical disadvantage and could have drawn level just five minutes into the second half.  Beacher was fouled at the edge of the box and Tim Rawlinsons free kick wasn’t far from the far corner.

Just when the game looked like it was going to see no further goals; it again sprang into action in the 75th minute.  Jason Stevens picked up a pass from Euan Campbell and danced by three University defenders.  He then rounded goalkeeper Tait, before seeing his left foot shot strike the inside of the post and run off to safety.

Just two minutes later, Beacher had a chance to equalise when a long ball down the right from Andy Cumming found Beacher one on one with Gordon.  His lobbed effort looked in all the way, but somehow drifted wide of Gordons right hand post.

With just five minutes of normal time remaining, Leith Athletic looked to have sealed all three points.  Stevens picked up the ball on the touchline and was brought down by Cumming, with the second penalty of the game being awarded.  Euan Campbell, playing his first competitive match in 18 months, stepped up to take the penalty and calmly slotted it home to make it 2-0.

Edinburgh didn’t give up and good work by substitute Calum Murray seen the ball played wide to Cyrus Moosavi.  His cross into the box was aimed at Murray, but he was pushed in the back by Chris Barrie and the referee awarded the third penalty of the match.  Murray stepped up to take the penalty and blasted it high into the top corner of the net to make it 2-1 in the 91st minute

Leith sealed their place in the quarter-final just one minute later when a long ball from Iain Gordon seen a mix up in the University defence, which allowed Jason Stevens to tap the ball home into an empty net.
