Edinburgh City 1 v 2 Spartans. Saturday 17th November 2012

Posted on 18/11/2012

Spartans completed a derby double over rivals Edinburgh City and are into the next round of the South Challenge Cup following a 2-1 victory at Meadowbank yesterday. Following on from their 2-0 league victory over City last weekend, Spartans travelled to Meadowbank without Danny O’Donnell and Ally MacKinnon who picked up injuries during the week.

Spartans started strongly and were awarded a penalty in the 13th minute when Chris Anderson’s cross was handled in the box. Keith McLeod stepped up and saw his kick saved by Andrew Stobie, however Jack Beesley reacted quickest to the rebound and tapped the ball home.

Chris Anderson hit the post and Willie Bremner headed just over as Spartans created several goal scoring chances. Just as it looked like Spartans would go into half time with a narrow lead, Ross Guthrie pulled City level with their first on target strike of the afternoon.

The second half was a much more even affair with both sides creating chances. Spartans got the winning goal in the 75th minute though, when a Mark Whatley throw into the box bounced off Grant Vanson and looped into the net for an own goal.

Chris Flockhart had to make a number of saves in injury time as City pushed forward looking for an equaliser however they were unable to make the most of several corners and Spartans were delighted to hear the full time whistle which confirmed their place in the next round of the South Challenge Cup.
